Hello everyone.
Today, I’d like to talk about yogurt in Japan.
What comes to mind when you think of Japanese yogurt?
One question I sometimes receive from international visitors is:
“Do you have any unsweetened yogurt?”
The answer is yes. Most Japanese convenience stores usually carry only one or two kinds of plain, unsweetened yogurt. However, the selection is much smaller than the variety of sweetened yogurt.
I was actually surprised to learn that many people from overseas prefer unsweetened yogurt. In Japan, most of the yogurt sold at convenience stores is sweetened.
Sweetened yogurt generally falls into two categories.
The first is fruit yogurt, which contains pieces of fruit or fruit flavors such as strawberry, orange, blueberry, or mixed fruit. One unique and long-selling Japanese favorite is aloe yogurt. It contains small pieces of aloe vera and has a light, refreshing taste. If you’ve never tried it, it’s definitely worth trying.
You can usually tell the flavor at a glance because the fruit is pictured on the package.
The second category is plain sweetened yogurt. These products usually do not have fruit on the package. Instead, you may notice names such as LG21 or R-1. These are brand names based on specific probiotic strains that are marketed for their potential health benefits. If you’re interested, you can easily learn more about them by searching for those names online.
Japanese convenience stores offer a surprisingly wide variety of yogurt. Whether you prefer sweetened or unsweetened yogurt, there’s a good chance you’ll find something you enjoy.
Thanks for reading, and enjoy discovering Japanese yogurt!
