Hello everyone.
Today, I’d like to talk about something you will see very often at Japanese convenience stores:
👉 private brand products.
Have you ever noticed snacks, bread, drinks, frozen food, or desserts with:
👉 Seven-Eleven
👉 FamilyMart
👉 Lawson
written directly on the package?
These are called:
👉 private brands (PB)
or:
👉 store brand products.
In other words:
👉 products sold under the convenience store’s own name.
Some visitors may wonder:
👉 “Does the convenience store actually make these products themselves?”
The answer is:
👉 yes and no.
In most cases:
👉 major food manufacturers produce them for convenience store chains.
For example:
a bread item sold at Lawson and another sold at FamilyMart may sometimes be produced by:
👉 the same large food company.
However:
👉 the recipe, ingredients, seasoning, quality standards, and packaging are usually customized for each chain.
So even if products look similar:
👉 they are not always exactly the same.
Are Private Brands Cheap Quality?
In some countries:
👉 private brand products are sometimes seen as:
cheap but lower quality alternatives.
However:
👉 Japan is a little different.
In many cases:
👉 Japanese convenience store private brands are:
good quality
safe
consistent
reasonably priced
Honestly:
👉 some are surprisingly good.
Because:
👉 major convenience store chains work closely with large food manufacturers.
Competition between convenience stores in Japan is also:
👉 very intense.
So:
👉 chains constantly try to improve quality to attract customers.
Does Each Convenience Store Have Different Strengths?
Very generally speaking:
👉 Seven-Eleven is often strong in prepared meals and rice dishes.
👉 FamilyMart is popular for snacks and fried foods.
👉 Lawson is often known for desserts and sweets.
Of course:
👉 this depends on personal taste.
And:
👉 some products are seasonal or limited edition.
So:
👉 trying different stores can actually be fun.
My Personal Advice
If you are not sure what to buy:
👉 try the convenience store private brand first.
In many cases:
👉 it offers a very good balance between:
quality
and
price.
Personally:
👉 I think Japanese convenience store private brands are often much better than many visitors expect.
So if you visit Japan:
👉 don’t be afraid to try them.
You might discover:
👉 a surprisingly good snack, dessert, or meal at a reasonable price.
See you next time!
