Hello everyone.
Today, I’d like to explain something that often confuses foreign visitors in Japanese convenience stores:
👉 how to buy cigarettes.
As someone who works at a convenience store in Tokyo:
👉 I see the same problem very often.
Many foreign customers try to buy cigarettes by:
👉 pointing at the cigarette display behind the register.
Honestly:
👉 this is much harder for staff than many people expect.
Why Is It Difficult?
The answer is simple:
👉 there are often more than 200 different cigarette products behind the counter.
From the customer’s side:
👉 it may look easy to point at the display.
However:
👉 from the cashier’s side, it is often difficult to tell exactly which product you mean.
Especially when:
- many packages look similar
- the display is far away
- the customer points quickly
- several products are close together
Sometimes:
👉 we genuinely cannot tell which cigarette you want.
The Easiest Way to Buy Cigarettes in Japan
The easiest method is very simple:
👉 use the product number.
If you look carefully at the cigarette display:
👉 you will usually see a small number under each product.
For example:
108
215
332
These numbers help staff identify the exact product quickly.
So instead of pointing:
👉 just say the number.
In most cases:
👉 the cashier will immediately understand.
How Should You Say the Number?
Here is a small but very useful tip:
👉 say the numbers one digit at a time.
For example:
Instead of:
❌ “one hundred eight”
Try:
✅ “one zero eight”
And:
👉 say it slowly.
Why?
Because many Japanese convenience store workers are not used to hearing fast English numbers in daily conversation.
Even if staff understand basic English:
👉 fast numbers can be surprisingly difficult to catch.
Saying each digit separately:
👉 greatly reduces misunderstandings.
For example:
“two one five”
or
“three three two”
usually works very well.
A Small Tip
Even if your English is limited:
👉 don’t worry too much.
Just saying:
“one zero eight”
is often enough.
Honestly:
👉 this is probably the easiest way to buy cigarettes in Japan.
What If You Don’t Know Which Cigarette to Buy?
That situation is actually very common too.
Especially for:
- tourists
- people trying Japanese cigarettes for the first time
- customers buying for someone else
I’ll explain that in:
👉 Part 2.
See you next time!
