Dream Chasers Working at Japanese Convenience Stores

Working at Konbini

Hello everyone.

Today, I’d like to focus on a certain type of convenience store worker:

👉 people who chase their dreams while working part-time jobs.

In Japan, many young people who live mainly through part-time work are not simply “unemployed.”

Quite often, they are pursuing something important to them.

Why Do They Choose Part-Time Work Instead of Full-Time Jobs?

One major reason is freedom.

Compared to full-time employees, part-time workers usually have:

  • more flexible schedules
  • fewer long-term responsibilities
  • greater freedom to adjust their working hours

For people trying to pursue difficult careers, this flexibility matters a lot.

Over more than 30 years working in convenience stores, I’ve met many dream chasers such as:

  • stage actors
  • musicians
  • comedians
  • writers
  • anime voice actors

Especially in large cities like Tokyo, convenience stores often become workplaces for people connected to the arts and entertainment world.

Can Dreams Really Come True?

Personally:

👉 I want to believe they can.

But to be honest, reality is harsh.

In over 30 years working in convenience stores:

👉 I have never personally seen a staff member fully achieve their dream.

And to be even more honest:

👉 I have rarely seen people continue chasing their dream long enough.

Many eventually give up and choose a different path.

That is simply how difficult these worlds are.

The People I Truly Respect

However, after meeting so many people over the years, I learned something important.

The difference is not talent alone.

👉 It is attitude.

Some people use their dream as an excuse to treat their current job carelessly.

They arrive late.
They avoid responsibility.
They act as if part-time work is beneath them.

Honestly speaking:

👉 I could never trust those people.

And in many cases, even after changing careers, they still fail to build anything meaningful.

On the other hand, there are people who seriously commit themselves even to small daily responsibilities.

Even while chasing difficult dreams, they still:

  • work hard
  • help coworkers
  • treat customers properly
  • take pride in their work

Those people are different.

Even if they eventually leave the convenience store world, I believe they are much more likely to succeed somewhere else.

Because discipline and sincerity eventually become real strength.

One Small Hope

My own convenience store career is probably much shorter now than it once was.

But before it ends, I still hope to meet someone who truly achieves their dream.

I think that would make all those years feel meaningful.

Thank you for reading, and see you next time.
