Please Don’t Put Unpaid Items in Your Bag in Japan (Part 2)

Customer Behavior

Hello everyone.

Today is Part 2 of my
👉 “Please Don’t Do This in Japanese Convenience Stores” series.

There is one behavior that sometimes surprises Japanese convenience store staff very much:

👉 putting unpaid items directly into your personal bag while shopping.

In some countries, this may be completely normal.

People may place items into:

  • backpacks
  • reusable shopping bags
  • handbags
  • shoulder bags

while continuing to shop normally.

However, in Japan:
👉 this can easily make store staff suspect shoplifting.

Why Is This a Problem?

The reason is simple.

Many shoplifters in Japan use the following method:

  • place unpaid items into their own bag
  • then leave the store without paying

Because of this, Japanese convenience store staff are trained to carefully watch situations where unpaid products are placed into personal bags.

Technically speaking:
👉 while you are still inside the store, the situation may sometimes be treated as “gray.”

However:
👉 the moment someone leaves the store without paying, it officially becomes shoplifting.

So even if a customer has no bad intention at all, this behavior can still make staff members very nervous.

Another Behavior That Surprises Japanese Staff

There is another similar situation that occasionally happens with foreign customers.

Sometimes people:

  • open drinks before paying
  • start eating food while waiting in line
  • consume products before reaching the register

The first time I personally saw this, I was honestly very surprised.

Now, after many years working at convenience stores with international customers, I usually think:

👉 “This is probably just a cultural difference.”

So I calmly continue the checkout process.

However:
👉 not every employee reacts the same way.

Some staff members may:

  • become confused
  • warn the customer
  • become irritated
  • or suspect theft

especially if they are not used to dealing with foreign tourists.

The Safest Rule in Japan

To avoid unnecessary misunderstandings in Japan:

👉 Do not place unpaid items into your personal bag.
👉 Do not eat or drink products before paying.

If you are buying many items:
👉 please use the shopping basket provided by the store.

These small cultural differences may seem minor, but understanding them can make shopping in Japan much smoother and more comfortable for everyone.

Thank you for reading, and see you next time!
