Please Don’t Show Large Amounts of Cash in Public

Hello everyone.

Today, I’d like to share one piece of advice for visitors to Japan.

Japan is known as one of the safest countries in the world. However, that does not mean crime never happens.

As someone who works at a convenience store, I sometimes see customers open their wallets or bags and reveal a thick stack of 10,000-yen bills while paying. Although most people around them are completely honest, displaying a large amount of cash in public is still unnecessary and may attract unwanted attention.

Remember that you are not the only person who can see your money. Other customers nearby may also notice it, and there is no need to let everyone know how much cash you are carrying.

A safer approach is to keep most of your cash in a separate place and take out only the bill you need when paying. If possible, using a credit card or another cashless payment method is even more convenient and reduces the need to handle large amounts of cash.

Japan is generally very safe, but basic precautions are always worthwhile. By avoiding unnecessary displays of cash, you can reduce the risk of theft or other problems and enjoy your trip with greater peace of mind.
