Hello everyone.
Have you ever withdrawn money from an ATM and then walked away without taking the cash?
I’ve never done it myself, but during my years working at convenience stores, I’ve seen customers forget their money several times.
So, what happens if you leave your cash behind at a convenience store ATM in Japan?
There are several possibilities.
1. The ATM May Take the Cash Back
This is probably the best-case scenario.
If cash is not removed from an ATM within a certain period of time, some ATMs will automatically retract the bills back into the machine.
This is an important safety feature.
Experienced convenience-store staff may therefore avoid touching cash that is still sticking out of the ATM, even if the machine is making a warning sound.
Why?
Because touching or removing the money can make the situation more complicated.
If the ATM retracts the cash, however, don’t simply assume that everything has automatically been resolved.
The exact procedure can vary depending on the ATM operator, bank, and transaction.
Check your account and contact the ATM operator or your financial institution if necessary.
2. A Store Employee Removes the Cash
Another possibility is that a store employee notices the money and removes it from the ATM.
The employee may be trying to protect the cash until its owner returns.
However, once the money has been removed from the ATM, identifying the owner becomes important.
If you return to the store and say:
“I forgot my cash at the ATM.”
the store may need some information to confirm what happened.
For example, they may ask approximately when you used the ATM and how much money you withdrew.
Convenience stores also generally have security cameras, so store staff may be able to investigate the situation according to their procedures.
Depending on the circumstances, the cash may also be handled as lost property.
3. Someone Takes the Money
Unfortunately, there is another possibility.
Someone else may take the cash.
Japan has a reputation for being relatively safe, but that doesn’t mean theft never happens.
If you believe your money was taken, tell the store staff what happened.
You should also consider contacting the police and the company operating the ATM.
Try to remember important details such as:
- Which ATM you used
- Approximately what time you used it
- How much you withdrew
- Which card or account you used
These details may make it easier to investigate what happened.
Security Cameras Can Be Important
Japanese convenience stores generally use security cameras throughout the store.
If something happens around an ATM, camera footage may therefore be useful in determining what happened.
However, customers normally cannot simply ask to watch security-camera footage themselves.
The store will handle the footage according to its own procedures and may cooperate with the police when necessary.
So, if you have a problem, explain the situation calmly to the store staff.
What Should You Do If You Forget Your Cash?
If you realize that you left your cash at a convenience store ATM, act quickly.
Return to the store as soon as possible and explain what happened.
Check your bank account to see whether the withdrawal was completed.
If necessary, contact the ATM operator or your bank.
If you believe someone took the money, you may also need to contact the police.
The Best Solution Is Simple
Of course, the easiest solution is not to forget your cash in the first place.
When using a convenience-store ATM in Japan, don’t walk away immediately.
Take your card.
Take your cash.
Take your receipt if you need it.
Then check everything once before leaving.
It only takes a few seconds.
If you do forget your cash, act quickly. Return to the store as soon as possible, check your account, and contact the ATM operator or your bank if necessary.
That’s all for today.
Be careful, and enjoy your stay in Japan!
