Hello everyone.
Today, I’d like to explain how to make Japanese cup yakisoba — because many foreign customers get confused and prepare it incorrectly.
First of all:
👉 Not all Japanese “cup noodles” contain soup.
Some products in the cup noodle section are actually:
👉 Yakisoba (fried noodles)
In Japan, we clearly distinguish between:
- Cup ramen (with soup)
- Cup yakisoba (without soup)
How to Make Cup Yakisoba
Compared to regular cup ramen, cup yakisoba is slightly more complicated to prepare.
First:
👉 Only add the dried vegetables at the beginning.
Do NOT add the sauce packets yet.
Most cup yakisoba includes:
- Dried vegetables
- Sauce
- Seasoning powder
- Mayonnaise (sometimes)
Usually:
👉 Only the dried vegetables go in before adding hot water.
Then:
- Open the lid partially
- Add the dried vegetables
- Pour in hot water
- Wait about 3 minutes
The Most Important Step
Here is the most important part:
👉 You MUST drain the hot water.
Japanese cup yakisoba containers always have a small drain opening near one corner of the lid.
Use that opening to carefully pour out the hot water without losing the noodles or vegetables.
After draining all the water:
👉 Add the sauce and mix everything together.
After mixing well, it’s ready to eat.
A Mistake I Once Saw
One time, I saw a foreign customer prepare cup yakisoba incorrectly.
The customer:
- Added ALL the sauce packets at the beginning
- Added hot water
- Waited 3 minutes
- Did NOT drain the water
Then they started eating it while looking very unhappy.
Honestly:
👉 It was shocking to watch.
So I bought another one with my own money and showed the customer the correct way to prepare it.
After tasting the real flavor of Japanese yakisoba, the customer was genuinely surprised and happy.
I still remember that moment very clearly.
Final Tip
If you visit Japan, I highly recommend trying Japanese cup yakisoba.
And if you cannot tell the difference between ramen and yakisoba, you can simply ask:
👉 “Is this yakisoba or ramen?”
Japanese convenience store staff will usually help you.
That’s all for today!
