Hello everyone.
Today, I’d like to share a simple communication tip that can make shopping at Japanese convenience stores much easier:
👉 simple English often works better than full sentences.
This may surprise some visitors.
Many Japanese convenience store staff know:
👉 basic English words.
However:
👉 many are not used to real-time English conversation.
For example:
if you say quickly:
👉 “How are you?”
some staff may freeze for a moment.
Why?
It is not because they are unfriendly.
And:
👉 it is not because they do not want to help.
In fact:
👉 many Japanese people studied English at school.
The challenge is usually:
👉 listening speed and real conversation experience.
So:
👉 simple words are often easier to understand.
For example:
Instead of:
👉 “Where can I find some fruit?”
Try:
👉 “Fruit?”
Or:
👉 “Fruit section?”
Honestly:
👉 this often works surprisingly well.
Another very useful method is:
👉 showing a photo on your smartphone.
If you are looking for a product:
👉 a picture is often the fastest way to communicate.
At Japanese convenience stores:
👉 pointing is also completely normal.
Many customers do it every day.
So:
👉 don’t worry too much about perfect English.
The key is simple:
👉 speak slowly
👉 use short words
👉 keep sentences simple
In many cases:
👉 communication becomes much easier.
Please give it a try during your visit to Japan.
