Why Didn’t My Credit Card Work in Japan?

Customer Behavior

Hello everyone.

Today, I’d like to talk about a problem that surprises many foreign visitors in Japan:

👉 “Why didn’t my credit card work?”

This happens more often than you might think.

At my convenience store in Tokyo:

👉 I sometimes see confused customers whose cards suddenly stop working.

You try to pay…

the cashier scans everything…

and then:

👉 “Declined.”

Naturally, many people think:

“Is there something wrong with the store?”

But in many cases:

👉 the issue is actually with the card settings or the payment system.

Today, I’d like to explain some common reasons.

1. Overseas Usage Is Not Enabled

This is probably:

👉 one of the most common reasons.

Some banks or credit card companies require:

👉 international payments to be activated before traveling abroad.

If overseas usage is not enabled:

👉 your card may automatically be blocked in Japan.

Because of this:

👉 it is a very good idea to check your card settings before arriving.

Many banks allow you to do this:

through an app,

online banking,

or customer support.

2. Fraud Prevention Systems May Block Your Card

Another very common reason is:

👉 security protection.

Card companies constantly monitor unusual activity.

For example:

If your card is usually used in:

👉 the United States, Europe, or another country,

and suddenly appears in:

👉 Japan,

the system may think:

“This could be fraud.”

As a result:

👉 the payment may be temporarily blocked.

This often happens:

👉 during the first few days after arriving in Japan.

Sometimes:

👉 simply contacting your card company solves the problem immediately.

3. Your Card May Not Work With Certain Terminals

This is less common, but:

👉 some payment terminals occasionally have compatibility issues.

For example:

certain overseas debit cards,

virtual cards,

or older cards

may not always work smoothly.

Even if your card works in:

restaurants,

hotels,

or department stores,

👉 it may occasionally fail at a convenience store terminal.

This does not happen often,

but:

👉 it can happen.

What About WeChat Pay?

At my store:

👉 I sometimes see payment problems with WeChat Pay as well.

When an error occurs:

👉 the payment system may take time to respond.

In busy stores:

👉 staff sometimes need to wait while the system processes the failed transaction.

Of course:

👉 nobody wants this situation.

But checking your settings beforehand can help avoid unnecessary stress.

My Advice: Always Prepare a Backup

If you are traveling in Japan:

👉 never rely on only one payment method.

I strongly recommend preparing:

a second credit card
some cash (Japan is still partly cash-based)
mobile payment apps
overseas payment activation

This small preparation can make your trip:

👉 much smoother and less stressful.

Japan is generally very convenient,

but payment systems can occasionally surprise first-time visitors.

See you next time!
