Hello everyone.
Today, I’d like to talk about something many foreign visitors and international residents sometimes need in Japan:
👉 diapers and sanitary products.
This may surprise you, but:
👉 Japanese diapers and sanitary products are often highly regarded overseas.
Because of their:
- quality
- comfort
- reliability
many travelers and international residents buy them in Japan.
At my convenience store in Tokyo:
👉 I often see foreign customers buying multiple packs at once.
Sometimes:
👉 entire shopping baskets are filled with diapers or sanitary products.
However:
👉 today, I’d like to share one important piece of practical advice.
Honestly:
👉 I do not recommend buying large amounts at Japanese convenience stores.
Why?
The answer is simple:
👉 convenience stores are mainly designed for emergency purchases.
Yes:
👉 most convenience stores sell diapers and sanitary products.
But in many cases:
👉 they are intended for situations such as:
“I suddenly need this right now.”
“I forgot to bring one.”
“My child needs diapers immediately.”
In other words:
👉 convenience stores are there to help when something unexpected happens.
The Hidden Problem: Price and Selection
There are a few things many visitors do not realize.
1. Limited Selection
At convenience stores:
👉 the variety is usually very limited.
You may only find:
- one or two diaper sizes
- a small number of sanitary pad options
- limited brands
If you need a specific size or product:
👉 you may not find it.
2. Smaller Package Sizes
Many convenience store products are sold in:
👉 smaller emergency-sized packages.
This is convenient if:
👉 you only need a few immediately.
However:
👉 if you plan to stay in Japan for several days or weeks,
buying repeatedly can become expensive.
3. Higher Prices
Honestly:
👉 convenience stores are usually more expensive.
This is true not only for diapers and sanitary products,
but for many daily necessities in Japan.
You are paying for:
👉 convenience and immediate access.
Where Should You Buy Them Instead?
If it is not an emergency:
👉 I strongly recommend visiting a Japanese drugstore.
Drugstores usually offer:
- much larger selections
- better prices
- bigger package sizes
- more baby and daily-care products
Supermarkets can also be a good choice.
Especially if you are staying in Japan for a longer period:
👉 shopping outside convenience stores can save you quite a bit of money.
A Small Travel Tip
When you visit Japan:
👉 try comparing the same products at:
- convenience stores
- drugstores
- supermarkets
You will probably notice:
👉 the price difference very quickly.
Japanese convenience stores are incredibly useful.
But honestly:
👉 learning when not to use them is also part of traveling smart in Japan.
I hope this small tip helps make your stay in Japan easier and more comfortable.
See you next time!
