Best Japanese Cup Noodles for Beginners: What Should You Try in Japan?

Customer Behavior

Hello everyone.

Today, I’d like to talk about one of Japan’s most famous convenience store foods:

👉 cup noodles.

Previously, I wrote an article explaining how to prepare Japanese cup noodles.

This time:

👉 I’d like to explain the differences in taste, style, and which products are especially popular among foreign visitors.

If you visit a Japanese convenience store for the first time, you may feel surprised by the noodle section.

Honestly:

👉 there are so many choices.

You may wonder:

“Which one should I buy?”

As someone who has worked in Japanese convenience stores for many years:

👉 let me give you a simple beginner’s guide.

Which Cup Noodles Are Most Popular Among Foreign Visitors?

At my convenience store in Tokyo:

👉 two products are especially popular among international customers.

And honestly:

👉 many people buy them repeatedly.

1. Shin Ramyun (辛ラーメン)

This spicy Korean noodle brand is extremely popular in Japan.

If you enjoy:

  • spicy food
  • rich soup
  • bold flavors

👉 this is a very good choice.

Many foreign visitors seem to love it.

However:

👉 it can be quite spicy.

Even some Japanese customers think:

“Wow, this is hot.”

So:

👉 if you are sensitive to spicy food, be careful.

2. Nissin Seafood Cup Noodles

If you are trying Japanese cup noodles for the first time:

👉 this may be one of the safest choices.

Why?

Because:

👉 the flavor is easy to enjoy for many people.

The soup has:

  • a mild seafood flavor
  • a creamy taste
  • very little spiciness

So:

👉 even people who do not usually eat Japanese food often enjoy it.

At my store:

👉 many foreign customers buy this repeatedly.

And honestly:

👉 it is one of my personal recommendations too.

What About Ichiran Instant Ramen?

Another product many foreign visitors look for is:

👉 Ichiran instant ramen.

Ichiran is one of Japan’s most famous ramen restaurant chains.

Because of its popularity:

👉 many tourists want to try the instant version too.

However:

👉 there is one problem.

It is not a regular item at most convenience stores.

Sometimes it appears:

  • for limited periods
  • during special promotions
  • at selected stores only

In other words:

👉 if you find it, you are lucky.

If you see it:

👉 you may want to buy it before it disappears.

Tall Cup vs. Bowl Type: What Is the Difference?

Foreign visitors may notice something interesting:

👉 Japanese cup noodles usually come in two styles.

At first glance:

👉 they may look similar.

But actually:

👉 they are quite different.

Tall Cup Type (縦型)

These are usually:

👉 simple, quick, and convenient.

Preparation is easy.

Most products only require:

  • hot water
  • sometimes one seasoning packet

Because of this:

👉 they are perfect when you want something fast.

In many cases:

👉 the noodles are fried in oil.

As a result:

👉 the texture can feel slightly more snack-like.

This type is usually:

  • cheaper
  • faster to prepare
  • easier for beginners

Bowl Type (どんぶり型)

These are often:

👉 closer to a real ramen experience.

Why?

Because manufacturers usually focus more on quality and detail.

For example:

👉 there are often multiple packets.

Some ingredients go in:

  • before hot water
  • after hot water
  • right before eating

Yes:

👉 it can feel slightly complicated.

However:

👉 the extra effort often creates a much better flavor.

Also:

👉 many bowl-type noodles use non-fried noodles.

Because of this:

👉 the texture often feels much closer to restaurant ramen.

The price is usually higher too.

In many cases:

👉 bowl-type noodles cost 100 yen or more above tall cup noodles.

But honestly:

👉 many are surprisingly good.

My Beginner Recommendations

If you are not sure where to start:

here is my simple advice.

Want something safe and easy?

👉 Try Nissin Seafood Cup Noodles

Love spicy food?

👉 Try Shin Ramyun

Want something closer to real Japanese ramen?

👉 Choose a bowl-type noodle

Final Thoughts

My simple recommendation is this:

If you want:

👉 something quick and easy → choose a tall cup

If you want:

👉 a more authentic ramen experience → choose a bowl type

Yes:

👉 bowl-type noodles take slightly more effort.

But if you visit Japan:

👉 I strongly recommend trying them at least once.

Japanese cup noodles are surprisingly high quality.

You may be surprised by how good they are.

See you next time!
